Homes located in the 90065 zip code are among those now eligible for State funding for preventive retrofitting against potential damage from a large earthquake. Single family homes that qualify are generally those built about 40 years ago with a few steps up to the entry. These houses frequently sit on relatively light wood-frame perimeters that--if not retrofitted--may allow the house to slide or fall off the foundations during a quake. Basically, retrofitting involves attaching the wood structure at the base of the house to the concrete foundation with metal bolts and strengthening the ground-level perimeter walls with plywood. The grants are income tax exempt at the State level.
Known as “Earthquake Brace and Bolt”, the program is administered by the California Residential Mitigation Program, and began accepting applications this month. For information or to apply, go to: earthquakebracebolt.com.
