Traffic, Speeding & Safety on Verdugo Rd.

September 14, 2015

To follow is a sample letter on the topic of traffic, speeding, and safety on Verdugo Road. If you feel this is an important issue, please contact CM Huizar and let your thoughts be known.

In recent years there has been an unsettling increase in traffic collisions on our streets, some of which have resulted in people losing their lives. One such street which has seen a sudden increase in safety problems is the 1.1 mile stretch of Verdugo Road between Eagle Rock Boulevard and Plumas Street, a street on which people frequently exceed the posted 35mph speed limit. The street straddles Glassell Park's District Areas 5, 6 and 7 in Council District 14.

A significant portion of Verdugo Road in this area is designated “Verdugo Village,” a primarily residential street with a handful of small businesses mixed in, but the street is too dangerous to provide a village-like feeling to the area. Safety is especially important on Verdugo Road not only because of the residential nature of the street but since many families also use the street to get to and from one of our public schools, Delevan Drive Elementary.

I'd like to request that Council District 14 work with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT), GPNC, GPIA and the community to identify potential improvements that will address the unsafe existing conditions on Verdugo Road to make the street safer for everyone in the community.
